Africa: a proposal for an AFCON "every four years" and a "pan-African league" (G. infantino, FIFA)

"I am proposing that the Africa Cup of Nations be held every four years instead of every two years to make it more commercially viable and attractive at a global level," said Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, during a seminar on the development of African football competitions and infrastructure held in Salé, near Rabat (Morocco) on 01/02/2020.

"AFCON revenues are twenty times less than those of the Euro. What I am asking you, and this is your decision, is to discuss and consider switching to an Africa Cup of Nations every four years. Of course, on condition that the revenues we lose are compensated. We're taking care of that and if we work together, we're not only going to double the revenue of the AFCON, but we're going to multiply it by four or six by presenting a product not only to Africa, but to the world," explained Gianni Infantino.

The next three editions of the AFCON have already been scheduled and have been awarded to host countries: 2021 in Cameroon (from 09/01 to 06/02/2021), 2023 in the Ivory Coast and 2025 in Guinea.
