Irishman Noel King has been appointed interim manager of Eire by the FAI (Football Association of Ireland), on the 23/09/2013. He takes over Italian Giovanni Trapattoni, who left his post on the 11/09/2013.

FAI's board of management stated that "it will take the appropriate time to appoint the best person to manage Ireland for the Euro 2016 campaign which starts in September 2014," on the 23/09/2013. Managerial appointment process will be done by former Irish international player Ray Houghton, who recruited Giovanni Trapattoni in 2008, and Dutch Ruud Dokter, high performance director.

Irish national team is virtually eliminated from qualifying for the 2014 World Cup (fourth in Group C with 11 points). The team still has two matches to play, with six points behind Sweden, the second of the group.

Noel King has been the U21 coach since 2010. While he will be managing the national team, Harry McCue, current U21 assistant coach, will handle matches of the U21 selection.
