UEFA: the new stadium of Atlético de Madrid chosen for the 2019 final of the Champions League

The 2018-19 UEFA Champions League final will take place in Madrid (ESP) on 01/06/2019 in the 68,000-seater Wanda Metropolitano (to be called the "Estadio Metropolitano" for UEFA purposes), the new stadium of Atlético de Madrid, decided UEFA following its Executive Committee meeting in Nyon (SUI) on 20/09/2017.

This decision comes four days after the first match of Atlético de Madrid in its new enclosure (1-0 win against Malaga), Saturday 16/09/2017. This new stadium was built on the site of the former Estadio Olímpico de Madrid. The other candidate stadium for the 2019 final was the Baku Olympic Stadium (AZE), where the 2015 Europa League final will be held (see below).

The Santiago Bernabéu stadium in Madrid has already hosted the final of the most prestigious European cup in 1957, 1969, 1980, and 2010. Madrid will thus, in 2019, become the second city to host its fifth final of the premier European competition (Champion Clubs' Cup / Champions League) after London.
