Pay TV: loss of 500,000 subscribers in Spain between 2012 and 2013, a 11.7% decrease

Spanish pay TV market has lost 502,190 subscribers in the second quarter of 2013 compared to the same period in 2012, according to the quarterly report of the CMT (the Spanish Securities Market Commission of Telecommunications), published on the 27/09/2013.

Spanish subscribers were 3.8 million on the 30/06/2013, against about 4.3 million a year earlier, a decrease of 11.7%. In absolute terms, the decline was five times higher than the one recorded between the second quarters of 2011 and 2012.

  • Gol TV, property of Mediapro group, which broadcast eight games of La Liga every week, has lost 110,156 subscribers and had 223,090 counts at the end of the second half of 2013, or a drop of 33% in twelve months.
  • Canal+, Co-broadcaster of the Spanish Liga, had 1.65m subscribers at the end of the second quarter 2013, 98,713 less than the previous year (-5.7%).
    • Over the past eight years, the Spanish channel has seen a steady decline in subscribers, as it counted nearly 2.1m at the end of first quarter 2005.
