2018 World Cup: Italy eliminated by Sweden, Carlo Tavecchio to convene the FIGC on 15/11/2017

"We are deeply bitter and disappointed with this failed qualification for the World Cup. This sporting failure requires finding shared solutions, and it is for this reason that I have called a meeting tomorrow (Wednesday 15/11/2017) with all members of the federation to conduct a thorough analysis and to decide on future choices," said Carlo Tavecchio, 74 years old, president of the FIGC, on 14/13/2017, the day after Italy were eliminated from the 2018 World Cup in Russia, after failing to beat Sweden in their two-legged play-off matchup.

Defeated 1-0 by Sweden in Solna (SWE) in the first leg on 10/11/2017, the Italian team drew 0-0 at the San Siro in Milan (ITA) on 13/11/2017. Russia 2018 will be the first World Cup without Italy since the 1958 edition in Sweden.

"Failure to qualify for the World Cup would be the apocalypse," Carlo Tavecchio said previously on 04/09/2017, after announcing the extension of coach Gian Piero Ventura's contract until 2020. "We will qualify, but if not, we will do whatever it takes to protect the interests of the federation," added Tavecchio.
