FIGC: Carlo Tavecchio, 74, resigns from the presidency, a new election to be held within 90 days

Carlo Tavecchio, president of the Italian Football Federation since 11/08/2014, announced his resignation at the federal council in Rome (ITA) on 20/11/2017, one week after the elimination of the Italian national team in the 2018 World Cup UEFA zone qualification, against Sweden (1-0 to the Swedes on aggregate) on 13/11/2017.

The resigning president, who was re-elected for four years on 06/03/2017, is expected to call new elections within 90 days. "He did not give the floor to anyone during the meeting, he told us of his intentions and should handle current affairs until the next elections," said Damiano Tommasi, president of AIC, the union of Italian footballers, who added: "We need a project that brings together the widest possible consensus, and I hope the future president will be someone who can talk about football."
