75% tax: "If the law is passed, we shall have to withdraw from football" (M6)

"If the law is passed in its current state, we shall have to withdraw from football, and thus the Girondins," said Nicolas de Tavernost, president and CEO of M6 (French free-to-air TV channel), the majority shareholder of Bordeaux since 1999, on the 20/10/2013.

"It is a fact, not a threat. We make great efforts to be completely transparent, and know exactly where all capital and investments come from. We have been supporting the Girondins since 1999 at the request of President Jean-Louis Triaud. It is obvious that if the negative impact of the 75% tax law becomes a reality, we would have to consider our investment in football," said Nicolas de Tavernost at the Gerland stadium after the match between Lyon and Bordeaux (1 -1, match-day 10 of Ligue 1).

The "exceptional solidarity contribution", officially known as the "75% tax" was passed by the National Assembly on the 19/10/2013. The percentage must be paid by clubs on all player revenues (salaries and bonuses) that exceed one million euros. The real rate is 50%, but when social charges are added, the total is around 75%.
