The city of Miami, Florida (USA) was formally awarded a future MLS expansion franchise, announced the North American soccer league on 29/01/2018. The official name, colours, and crest will be formalised at a later date, though MLS commissioner Don Garber confirmed on 30/01/2018 that the Miami franchise will enter the league for the 2020 season.

"Our mission to bring an MLS club to Miami is now complete, and we are deeply satisfied, grateful and excited. Our pledge to our fans in Miami and around the world is simple: your team will always strive to make you proud on the pitch, our stadium will be a place that you cherish visiting, and our impact in the community and on South Florida's youth will run deep," said David Beckham (ENG), the leader of the investment group for the Miami MLS franchise, and who becomes the first former MLS player to hold an ownership stake in a club.
