BT Sport acquires UK rights for European cups from 2015 to 2018 for €1.07 billion

The British pay-TV group, BT Sport, have acquired the exclusive broadcast rights, in the UK, for the Champions League and Europa League for the period 2015-2018, the company announced on the 09/11/2013.

BT bought the rights for €1,075,981,484, or about €359 million per season. The deal includes broadcast rights for 350 games each season for both European club competitions together and highlights of all games. The final of each tournament, and a selection of major matches from earlier rounds will be broadcast free of charge in the UK.

"Fans will also be delighted to know that each participating British team will feature for free at least once each season," said the telecommunications group. The rights acquired by BT cover all platforms (television, Internet, mobile).

"The rights are expected to drive additional growth in BT Consumer (phone, broadband, TV and BT Sport) revenue and profits over the medium-term," the company said. "BT will pay a deposit of around £60m in November 2013 followed by six-monthly instalments commencing July 2015".
