"At the end of the 2016/2017 season, the financial results for French professional football indicate good commercial performance and strengthening of fundamentals," states Jean-Marc Mickeler, president of the DNCG (French professional football control authority), in the opening the 2016-17 Financial Report of French professional football, presented on 13/04/2018.

"Revenue (excluding transfers) was up by more than 10% (+10.3% to € 1.863bn, with expenses under control. The net equity of professional clubs had increased by 21%. Financial liabilities had been reduced by 14%. The season was also marked by significant investment following the arrival of new investors, and by reduced transfer profit in relation to the previous season. These two factors account for the decline in cumulative net profit," adds Jean-Marc Mickeler.

This cumulative net profit (the 40 clubs of Ligue 1 and Ligue 2) passed from +€2.93m in 2015-16, to -€101.29m in 2016-17.
