"FIFA is extremely satisfied with the level of refereeing to date and the successful implementation of the VAR (video assistant referee) system, which on the whole has been positively accepted and appreciated within our football community," said the international federation, a week after the 2018 World Cup began, on 20/06/2018.

"It is acknowledged that there will still be discussion and divided opinion surrounding certain decisions and we appreciate you understanding that it is not possible for FIFA to comment on each and every situation," added FIFA in a statement.

During the first 17 matches of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, four penalties have been awarded after video assistant referee intervention, the first being to the benefit of France versus Australia (2-1, Group C, Kazan Arena, on 16/06/2018).

VAR is part of the changes to the Laws of the Game approved by IFAB on 03/03/2018 and which have been applied at the 2018 World Cup by decision of the FIFA Council on 16/03/2018.
