EU: adoption of the 2014-2016 programme of work on safety at sports events

Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Council have approved the adoption of the 2014-2016 programme for work, on minimising risks to safety, security and public order in connection with sports events, in particular football matches, with an international dimension, in Brussels, on the 05/12/2013.

"Football-related violence and disorder is a global phenomenon which requires a sophisticated strategic response to deliver measures designed to reduce risks," said the report.

"European experience and good practice demonstrate that this can only be achieved through a comprehensive integrated multi-agency approach to football-related safety, security and service."

The work programme focuses on three main themes: international cooperation, expertise and support, and finally training.

International cooperation:

    • at European level, through the Law Enforcement Working Party (LEWP), an expert group for major sports events with a view to making swift recommendations.
