Brazil: fan dies in riot during Vasco da Gama - Atlético Paranaense match

Clashes between supporters caused the death of a man on the last day of the Brazilian championship between Vasco da Gama and Atlético Paranaense (1-5) in the Joinville Arena (Santa Catarina State in southern Brazil ), on the 08/12/2013. Three other fans are in a coma.

"This is not a circus, it is recreation, a sporting event that has to bring joy and not death. At Vasco we do not accept that," said Antonio Peralta, vice president of the club.

"It's sad to see images like these just before the World Cup in our country," said Adilson Batista, the Vasco da Gama coach.

The match was classified as high risk and had been relocated to Joinville, a neutral ground, because of previous clashes between supporters of the two clubs, one based in Rio de Janeiro (Vasco de Gama) and one in Curitiba, in the State of Parana (Atlético Paranaense). Security was provided by a private company hired by Atletico Paranaense, since a law of the State of Santa Catarina prevents police from providing security during "private events."
