NBA: first major league in North America to enter into a sports betting partnership (MGM Resorts)

MGM Resorts, an American chain of hotels and casinos, has become the official gaming partner of the National Basketball Association and the WNBA, on 31/07/2018. A contract of at least $25m (€21.6m on 06/08/2018) over three seasons (2018-2021) has been reported by the North American sports media outlet ESPN, on 01/08/2018.

This is the first time a major North American league has entered into a partnership with a sports betting operator. As part of the agreement, MGM Resorts will be able to use the NBA and WNBA statistics and data, as well as the image and brand of franchises and players, to offer sports betting on these two leagues in its establishments and on digital platforms throughout the United States. The agreement is non-exclusive.

The US Supreme Court abolished the sports betting ban in 46 of the country's 50 states (Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana already allowed sports betting) on 14/05/2018. This decision ends the 1992 text, the "Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act", which prohibited any legalisation of paid sports betting in the United States.
