Austria: public broadcaster ORF acquires TV broadcast rights for 2015-2018 Champions League

The Austrian public broadcaster ORF has acquired the TV rights to broadcast live and free, the Champions League for the period 2015-2018 in Austria, on the 10/12/2013. The rights were acquired "for an economically justified price," said Alexander Wrabetz, CEO of ORF, on the 10/12/2013.

The rights acquired by ORF include a Wednesday night group stage match, then one game per week for each knockout round (four second round games, two quarter-finals, two semi-finals, and the final). Also included is a highlights programme of games played on the same night as the game broadcast by the channel (highlights of a maximum of four matches in the group stage).

They also include the 2015-2018 editions of the UEFA Supercup, which sees the winners of the Champions League play the Europa League winners. The rights acquired by ORF include TV, internet and radio.

  • ORF broadcast the Champions League in Austria on free-TV until 2012, when the free-TV channel Puls 4 (subsidiary of the German pay-TV group ProSiebenSat.1) acquired the rights to the competition for 2012-2015.
