The summer transfer market closed in England on Thursday 09/08/2018 (at 17:00 local time, 18:00 CET) on the eve of the opening game of the first matchday of the Premier League, Manchester United - Leicester City, at Old Trafford (75,635 capacity), on Friday, 10/08/2013 (kick-off at 20:00 local time, 21:00 CET).

The Premier League and English Football League (EFL) have now decided to close the transfer market before the start of the first division season. Their clubs are no longer allowed to buy players, but they can still sell to leagues where the window is still open. However, EFL clubs can still take players on loan until 31/08/2018.

The 20 clubs of the Premier League (or rather 19 of them, since Tottenham Hotspur did not acquire a single player) look to have spent £1.26bn (€1.4bn) on new players in the 2018 summer, according to English media. This is less than in summer 2017, a record transfer window with a total of £1.4bn (€ 1.51bn as at 31/08/2017) spent by the English top flight.

Italy is the only other country in the European Top 5 that has decided to end the transfer…
