La Liga: sentenced to seven years in prison, Sevilla president Jose Maria del Nido resigns

Jose Maria del Nido, president of Sevilla (La Liga, ESP) has resigned, on the 09/12/2013. The president was sentenced by the Spanish Supreme Court to seven years in prison on the 06/12/2013, for embezzlement and obstruction of justice. Jose Maria del Nido was given about 3 million euro by local authorities in Marbella (Andalusia) for unnecessary work, or work that was never done between 1999 and 2003.

"If I had known what was going to happen then I would have resigned before now. Today I leave with regret, with a deep sadness and with humility. I have made many mistakes, but I always took decisions based on what was best for Sevilla. To work for the club of my heart has been the dream of my life," said José Maria del Nido, on the 09/12/2013.

Jose Maria del Nido, a lawyer, was appointed president of FC Sevilla on the 27/05/2002. Under his presidency, the club won the Spanish Cup (2010), the Spanish Super Cup (2007), two UEFA Cups (2006 and 2007) and a UEFA Super Cup (2006).
