"Pending approval of the UEFA Executive Committee, the 'green light' has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021-22 season," said Andrea Agnelli, president of the European Club Association (ECA) at its 21st General Assembly in Split (CRO) on 11/09/2018.

The three European Cups (The Champions League, Europa League and the future competition) would each welcome 32 clubs (versus 48 currently for the Europa League), according to several international sports daily newspapers.

""A detailed assessment of the existing International Match Calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024. The current model needs modernising," added the president of Juventus FC (Serie A TIM).

  • Three European Cups were organised by UEFA Union of European Football Associations from 1960-61 to 1998-99.
    • The European Cup Winners' Cup was dropped at the end of the 1998-99 season.
