Italy: four arrested in the "Calcioscommesse" match-fixing case

Italian police arrested four people and launched an investigation into former players Gennaro Gattuso and Christian Brocchi in Italy's football match-fixing scandal "Calcioscommesse" ("football betting"), announced the Italian authorities on the 17/02/2013.

The four people arrested are suspected of having served as intermediaries between players and match-fixers. Former Italian international Gennaro Gattuso (pictured), a 2006 world cup winner, and the former Lazio player, Christian Brocchi are suspected of "criminal association for the purposes of sporting fraud". Their homes were searched. The accusations will be backed up by phone taps that show contact with match-fixers.

"For 30 Serie A games, there has been contact between Francesco Bazzani (one of four people arrested) and players or managers," said Roberto Di Martino, the Cremona state prosecutor, where the case was disclosed.

This is the third intervention by the Cremona prosecutors office. In total, 54 people have been arrested and 120 people are being investigated.
