The Briton Alasdair Bell has been appointed deputy secretary general of FIFA in charge of administration, effective from 01/09/2018. He replaces the Swiss Marco Villiger, who announced his departure from the world body on 20/08/2018.

The legal director of FIFA since 2007, Marco Villiger, a lawyer by profession, became deputy secretary general in 2016, after the election of the current FIFA president Gianni Infantino (SUI-ITA) on 26/02/2016.

Alasdair Bell was previously the director of legal affairs for UEFA, and worked with Gianni Infantino, who was the secretary general of the European Confederation from October 2009 to February 2016.

Gianni Infantino and Alasdair Bell were the two members appointed by UEFA to the "2016 FIFA Reform Committee", whose composition had been made public by FIFA on 11/08/2015. The committee was charged with drafting reform proposals presented at the Extraordinary FIFA Congress in Zurich (SUI) on 26/02/2016, at which Gianni Infantino was elected to succeed Joseph Blatter as president of the international federation.
