2014 World Cup security: Brazil to set up a riot force of 10,000 policemen

Brazilian authorities have set up a special riot force of 10,000 policemen, deployed in the 12 host cities of the 2014 World Cup, which will take place in Brazil from the 12/06 to the 13/07/2014, indicated the local press on the 03/01/2014.

“We've have been concerned with this (security during the World Cup) before the protests that took place earlier this year (during the 2013 Confederations Cup, held in Brazil from the 15/06 to the 30/06/2013) because we don't wait around for things to happen. The violence of recent protests is what scared us,” explained Colonel Augusto Alexandre Aragon, head of the elite National Security Force, to the Brazilian media on the 03/01/2014.

More than a million people demonstrated on the 21/06/2013, including 300,000 in the city of Rio de Janeiro, against corruption, rising prices and the high cost of the organisation of the 2013 Confederations Cup and the 2014 World Cup (11 billion euros for those two events).
