Brazil 2014 : Manaus stadium builders on strike to ask for improved safety conditions

The Arena Amazonia stadium builders in Manaus have gone on strike demanding better security conditions on the construction site, said the Amazonia State workers union, on the 16/12/2013.

1,800 workers have gone on strike to denounce the pressures to accelerate the construction, at the expense of safety conditions. This decision follows the death of a worker who fell from the roof, on the 14/12/2013.

"Working conditions are very hard. Today, a builder works more than 80 hours per week. He starts at 7am until 10 or 11pm, sometimes even midnight," said Cicero Custodio, vice president of the workers union.

Works on the ground had resumed after the accident, whereas services being performed at height have been stopped following a decision by the Labour Court of the Amazonia State , for an investigation to be conducted. A team of experts visited the site on the 16/12/2013. They have to hand over a report on the security and working conditions.
