French Cup: "completely unusual bets" registered on the match between La Cayolle and L'Île-Rousse

Some "completely unusual bets" were registered before the round of 64 game of the French Cup between the Marseille based club of La Cayolle (French eighth division) and the Corsican club of L'Île-Rousse (French fifth division) on the 05/01/2014, indicated ARJEL, the French regulatory authority for online games and betting, on the 09/01/2014.

The match was played in Martigues (South of France) and won by L'Île-Rousse (2-0, with two goals at the 87' and 90' + 1 minutes). "Exceptional" amounts of bets were recorded for this kind of game, said ARJEL, who alerted the police on the 06/01/2014. ARJEL's alert system on sports bets detected several "really unusual" phenomena.

The police investigation hasn't revealed "anything abnormal", according to a source familiar with the case.

Unusual facts registered by ARJEL:

  • Around € 100,000 were bet, a "huge" amount for a meeting between two teams at this level (compared to an average of € 10,000).
  • Almost all the bets were made on one club (La Cayolle), which, according to ARJEL is "quite unusual", whatever the game is.
