Security: the Italian Ministry of Interior willing to "improve" the Fan card

"We do not want to abolish the 'tessera del tifoso' (Fan ID card) but to start thinking about how to improve it," said a source from the Italian Ministry of Interior to the Italian daily La Repubblica, on the 11/01/2014.

The tessera del tifoso was introduced by the Ministry of Interior during the 2009-10 season and became mandatory for traveling supporters in January 2010. Besides away games, this document is also essential in order to purchase a subscription. The objective is to fight violence and insecurity in Italian football. The "questura online" service allows clubs to check in real time if card applicants have been convicted, and in this case, to refuse to make them "tesserati" (cardholders).

The initiative was strongly rejected by the groups of Italian fans who criticise the control imposed by this card with the creation of fans files. They also question the fact that the card is a paying service (at least 10 euros per year).
