United States: The Supreme Court to investigate the case on Aereo, a TV streaming service

The US Supreme Court will investigate the complaint of four major US media groups (CBS Corp., 21st Century Fox, Walt Disney Co. and Comcast Corp.) against Aereo, a streaming video service, the body announced on the 10/01/2014. These four media groups filed a complaint, for violation of copyright law, in front of the Federal Courts of Boston and New York in early 2013, and both jurisdictions ruled in favor of Aereo. The complainants then turned to the Supreme Court, in October 2013.

Aereo is a paying streaming television service, which picks up the free, over-the-air TV signals of nearly 30 US broadcasters and then send it to its customers over the Internet. The subscribers receive the TV signal via a dedicated antenna and watch it live (or record and watch it later) on their computer, smartphone, tablet or connected TV. Users don't need to stand near the antenna to use the service, the signal being sent to an online cloud system, to which they can connect remotely.
