eSports: two Fortnite (video game) tournaments organised at the Australian Open 2019

Two eSports tournaments on the video game Fortnite (published by Epic Games) will be organised during the Australian Open tennis tournament (played in Melbourne from 14 to 27/01/2019), according to Tennis Australia, organisers of the Grand Slam tournament, on 07/01/2019. The total prize money for the tournaments is A$500,000 (€312,085).

Both events will take place on Court No. 1, the Margaret Court Arena (7,500 capacity, third largest stadium in Melbourne Park), on the days of the finals of the tennis tournament organised by Tennis Australia (Australian Tennis Federation), on 26 and 27/01/2019. The tournaments will be played on PC.

For the individual tournament "The Fortnite Summer Smash", the first 500 eligible players (over 16 years of age and Australian or New Zealand resident) who register will compete first in a qualifying round on 26/01/2019. The 100 qualifiers will compete on 27/01/2019 and A$100,000 (€62,417) will be awarded to the winner while A$300,000 (€187,251) will be shared between the other 99 players. Online registration begins on 09/01/2019.
