France TV rights: Canal+ may have asked the Premier League if RMC Sport could co-broadcast games

The pay-TV group Canal+, the rights holder, in France, to broadcast the entirety of the Premier League (380 matches per season) for the 2019-2022 cycle, has asked the English first division if the pay-TV package RMC Sport, a subsidiary of Altice Europe and the current holder of these rights (2016-2019 cycle), can co-broadcast "almost all" of the games for the 2019-2022 cycle, according to the French sports daily L'Equipe on 15/01/2019.

"(For a possible sub-licensing of Premier League matches), the authorisation of the Premier League is required. We'll look at all the scenarios and if one of them makes sense, I have no doubt that we'll have a Premier League agreement. We will discuss with everyone and therefore with SFR. The most important thing for me is not to deprive SFR of the Premier League, but that Canal+ subscribers get it back," said Maxime Saada, CEO of the Canal+ group, to L'Equipe on 01/11/2018, the day after the acquisition of these rights.

Canal+ would have acquired these rights for an amount of €90m per season (2019-2022), against €120m for Altice Europe…
