West Bromwich Albion: Nicolas Anelka officially charged by the FA, following his “quenelle“ gesture

Nicolas Anelka, West Bromwich Albion striker, has been formally charged by the FA (Football Association) on the 21/01/2014, following his "quenelle" gesture during the match against West Ham United (3-3, Premier League matchday 19) on the 28/12/2013. The gesture, considered by the 34 years old striker as "anti-system" is considered anti-Semitic by many observers.

The French international player (69 caps, 14 goals) has been charged for "a gesture which was abusive and/or indecent and/or insulting and/or improper, contrary to FA Rule (...) in that it included a reference to ethnic origin and/or race and/or religion or belief", said a statement from the English body.

The player has until the 23/01/2014 at 6pm to respond to the charge. He is facing a five-game suspension. "Nicolas Anelka is now considering his options (...) he remains available for first-team selection until The FA’s disciplinary process has reached its conclusion" declared the club, on the 21/01/2014.
