UEFA: FIFA competition projects deemed "unacceptable" by European bodies

"UEFA, ECA and European Leagues were adamant that the current proposals are unacceptable as they stand," stated the Professional Football Strategy Council (PFSC) after a meeting in Nyon (SUI) on 18/02/2019.

"They (the three authorities) were of the unequivocal view that any decision on potential new competitions can only be made as part of an agreed framework for the international match calendar post-2024. Furthermore, all related sporting and commercial matters must be fully disclosed and discussed amongst professional football stakeholders beforehand," added the PFSC.

A consortium that potentially brings together the Japanese holding company Softbank and investors from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and the United States are reported to have proposed to FIFA, in the spring of 2018, to inject $25bn (€20.4bn) into the 2021-2033 period for the organization, with a new formula for a 24-team Club World Cup (every four years) and a Nations League on a global scale that would replace the current Confederations Cup.
