Spain: the Supercopa de España should be played in a "final four" format abroad in 2019

"The next Supercopa de España should be played outside of Spain with a 'final four' format," said Luis Rubiales, president of the RFEF, who presented the new format at an assembly of the Federation on 19/02/2019. "In this way, the top two of the Spanish first division (LaLiga Santander) and the two finalists of the Copa del Rey would face in a semi-finals and final format," added the Spanish Federation.

From 1982 to 2017, the Supercopa de España pitted the Spanish champions against the winner of the Copa del Rey, with a return-leg. The 2018 Supercopa de España adopted a new format: a single match between FC Barcelona, the 2017-18 Spanish champions, and Sevilla FC, Copa del Rey finalists (defeated 5-0 in the final by FC Barcelona), at the Stade Ibn Batouta in Tangiers (Morocco) on 12/08/2018 (2-1 victory for Barça).
