The British government refuses to extend the opening hours of pubs for 2014 World Cup

The Home Office, the executive department of the British government in charge of domestic policy, refused, on 02/02/2014, the request of the BBPA (British Beer and Pub Association) to extend the opening hours of British pubs during the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The BBPA asked that the pubs be allowed to remain open until 1am, later than the usual 23:00 closing time, due
to the scheduling of the England-Italy match, on the 14/06/2014, at 23:00 UK time. It was also requested that the pubs can remain open until 1am for the last weekend of the World Cup on 11 and 12/07/2014.

The Home Office does not consider the World Cup as an "exceptional" event, as was the Golden Jubilee on 03/06/2012. On this occasion, British pubs were able to extend their opening hours. "For most people, pubs will be the best place to enjoy the live games in a great atmosphere," said Brigid Simmonds, CEO of the BBPA. "This decision is extremely disappointing and I hope that the Government will reconsider."
