Poland: Z. Boniek, president of the Federation, joins the supervisory board of the first division

Zbigniew Boniek, chairman of the PFA (Polish Football Association) since October 2012, has joined the supervisory board of the Ekstraklasa, the league that manages the Polish first division, on 29/01/2014. The federation, as a partner of the Ekstraklasa, is entitled to a seat on the supervisory board. The other seats are occupied by representatives of the top four clubs from the previous season, and two representatives of the twelve other clubs of the first division. Members of the Supervisory Board shall serve for one year.

Before assuming the presidency of the PFA, Zbigniew Boniek was a board member of the Polish professional football club Widzew Łódź from 2004 to 2008. He is also a former professional player, notably at Juventus (Serie A) from 1982 to 1985 and AS Roma (Serie A) from 1985 to 1988.

  • Since the 2013-14 season, the Supervisory Board of the League reorganised the championship. Now the Ekstraklasa is divided into two phases:
    • a classical phase of thirty matches
    • a second phase of seven games in which teams play for the title or to avoid relegation
