"Fondazione Milan (foundation belonging to AC Milan, Serie A TIM) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) join forces once again to create sport areas in the reception centre in Niger hosting refugees evacuated from Libya," announced the Italian cub on 09/04/2019.

The funds provided by AC Milan will enable the construction of a football pitch with stands, as well as basketball, volleyball and handball courts in the Niamey (Niger) reception centre. The creation of these facilities is part of the UNHCR's "Sport as therapy" project, which aims to enable refugees to practice sport to alleviate the trauma associated with their exile.

"The main beneficiaries of the project are refugees originating from the Horn of Africa who have been evacuated from detention centres in Libya by UNHCR. They are vulnerable people, mostly young people, who have suffered violence and torture. Many of them show the effects of deep trauma, and so the project aims to help them socialise and regain confidence and self-esteem through sport," said AC Milan.
