FAI: former CEO John Delaney steps down as executive vice-president of the Irish Association

"John Delaney has offered to voluntarily step aside from carrying out his role as executive vice-president with immediate effect pending the completion of an independent investigation by the Association into issues of concern to the Board," announced the Football Association of Ireland on 15/04/2019.

According to the BBC, John Delaney had admitted to an oireachtas committee (Irish parlimentary committee) having loaned the FAI €100,000 in April 2017 in order to "avoid exceeding its overdraft" during an examination of the FAI's governance and finance. "The loan was not flagged to Sport Ireland, which oversees the public funding of sporting organisations. It is suspending funding to the FAI as a result," said the BBC.

"The Board of the Association wishes to assure members, football supporters and all stakeholders and sponsors that it is expediting all processes designed to restore faith in the Football Association of Ireland.
