Spain: RFEF validates the new formats of the Copa Del Rey and Supercopa de España (final four)

"The Extraordinary General Assembly of the RFEF approved on Monday the new format for the Copa del Rey which will come into force for the 2019-2020 season. A total of 116 teams divided into the following categories will take part in the new model: 20 from LaLiga Santander, 22 from LaLiga 1|2|3, 28 from the Segunda División B (Spanish third division), 32 from the Tercera división (fourth division), the four semi-finalists of the Copa RFEF and 10 teams from regional championships," announced the Spanish Federation on 29/04/2019.

During the 2018-19 season, only 84 clubs took part in the Copa del Rey, with return leg matches from the Round of 16 to the semi-finals. From 2019-20 onwards, only one match will be played in each round, with the exception of the semi-finals. The four teams that will participate in the new Supercopa de España format will be exempt from the first two rounds of the Copa del Rey.
