Bundesliga: sales and purchases down in the 2014 winter transfer market, - €22.75m deficit

The 2014 winter transfer window of the Bundesliga (01 to 31/01/2014) was characterised by a decrease in the number of transfers (85 in January 2014 against 104 in 2013, - 18.3%), of total sales (€10.7m in 2014 against €24.6m in 2013, - 56.5%) and total purchases (€33.45m in 2014 against €40m in 2013, - 16.4%) by clubs in the German Bundesliga.

Bundesliga clubs increased the deficit in the total balance of payments, which amounted to €22.75m at 31/01/2014, against €15.4m in 2013, a deficit increase of 47.7% over twelve months. This is the largest deficit in the balance of payments for Bundesliga clubs for a transfer window since January 2008 (- €28.7m). Out of the five major European championships, the Bundesliga had the second lowest level of activity during the 2014 transfer window, behind the Spanish Liga (€8.8m of sales and purchases of €16.25m).

The 18 clubs in the German Bundesliga completed nearly 46% of their sales to foreign championships, a comparable ratio to the January transfer window of 2013 (44.6%). But the share of international purchases by Bundesliga clubs rose by…
