French Senate: fact finding mission sent to Bayern and Schalke 04, on 11 and 12/02/2014

A fact finding mission regarding professional sport and local authorities took place in Germany on the 11 and 12/02/2014 to study the economic model of professional clubs and their relationship with local authorities

This French enquiry, led by Senator Michel Savin, was approved and scheduled by the Senate in October 2013.

The goal is to "enable local communities to better meet the needs of clubs and sports organisations."

  • The Senators arrived on 11/02/2014 at the headquarters of FC Bayern Munich, greeted by Dr. Michael Gerlinger, director of legal affairs of the club. The schedule included:
    • a visit to the Allianz Arena with Jürgen Muth, CEO
    • an interview with Volker Stix, deputy director of FC Bayern Basketball at the Audi Dome basketball stadium
    • a discussion with Thomas Urban, sports director for the city of Munich
  • The next meeting, on 12/02/2014, with Claudio Kasper and Michael Scharold, deputy financial directors of Schalke 04 included:
    • a visit to the Veltins Arena
    • a discussion with Klaus Hermandung, deputy director of Tourism and Culture in the city of Gelsenkirchen
