Spain: government to limit the ratio to 1 to 4 for TV rights monies received by clubs

A new sport law being prepared by the Spanish government, in collaboration with the LFP (Spanish Professional Football League), would limit the income gap for television rights between the Liga club who receives the most revenue and the one that receives the least. The new ratio would be 1 to 4, against the current ratio of 1 to 6.5, according to the U.S. economic news source Bloomberg on 10/02/2014, and based on an email they have from Javier Tebas, the president of the LFP.

In Spain, revenues from TV rights are negotiated individually by the clubs with the broadcasters. Thus, Real Madrid and Barcelona each received €140m of revenue per season from TV rights for La Liga over the period 2010-2014, through their agreement with the Spanish broadcaster Mediapro. This amount is 6.5 times higher than that received by the lowest Liga club in TV rights monies, according to Bloomberg, citing Javier Tebas.
