Bundesliga: German insurer Allianz acquires 8.33% of Bayern Munich for €110m

German insurer Allianz acquired a 8.33% stake in the FC Bayern Munich AG corporation for €110m on 11/02/2014.

The Bayern Munich association is owned by a public shareholding group of 187,865 members equating to a 75% share of the company. Adidas, the sports equipment brand and automobile maker Audi will now each hold a 8.33% stake in the club. Allianz strengthened its presence in the club after acquiring the naming rights to the stadium of Bayern for an estimated €6m annually. The entrance of Allianz into the shareholding group also allows the insurer to extend its contract for naming rights until 2041.

Additional funds provided by the new investor will be used to repay debt incurred for the construction of the Allianz Arena. The stadium opened in 2005 and cost the club €340m. The insurance company's investment will also finance the expansion of the venue. Bayern wishes to increase the capacity to 75,000 seats, as opposed to the current 71,137 seats.
