Qatar 2022: publication of "Workers’ Welfare Standards" for World Cup construction sites

Qatar announced measures called "Workers’ Welfare Standards" aimed at protecting the many immigrant workers employed on projects relating to the 2022 World Cup, the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee announced on 11/02/2014.

The emirate also invited the ILO (International Labour Organisation) to verify the application of its laws, covering "the entire process, from recruitment to the conditions of life and work."

FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association) asked Qatar to submit a status report on the improvement of working conditions in the country on 30/01/2014. A deadline was set for 12/02/2014 to allow the report "to prepare for a hearing in the European Parliament held on 13/02/2014 in Brussels with the participation of Theo Zwanziger, a member of the Executive Committee of FIFA and representative of the international federation responsible for the case," said the global organisation.

Qatar published its new charter on 11/02/2014, on the eve of the deadline and subsequently, on the National Day of Sport in the emirate.
