Women's World Cup 2019: 53.3% of participating players play for a European club (ECA)

53.3% of the participants in the Women's World Cup 2019 play for a European club, according to a study by the ECA published on 31/05/2019. For the previous edition of the competition in Canada in 2015, this percentage was 40.8%. The proportion of European teams taking part in the World Cup in France, which is the first edition with 24 teams, is 37.5% (9 out of 24).

The ECA statistics are based on the official squads of the 24 teams (23 players per team, or 552 in total) that the qualified Federations sent to FIFA ahead of the deadline on 27/05/2019.

"Of the 219 clubs worldwide releasing players, 111 (over half) are European clubs, a 50% increase from the previous FIFA Women's World Cup in 2015 (74 players)," said the ECA.

FC Barcelona (ESP) and Olympique Lyonnais (FRA) are the joint Top 5 European clubs with the most participating players under contract:

3. Chelsea FC (ENG): 12 players.
3. Manchester City FC (ENG): 12 players.
