LaLiga: a fine of €250,000 imposed by the Spanish Data Protection Agency

The Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD) has imposed a fine of €250,000 on LaLiga, which has announced that it will appeal this decision before the Spanish courts on 12/06/2019.

The AEPD criticised the Spanish League for not having clearly informed users of its official application that it could activate the microphone on their smartphone and geolocate them. LaLiga allegedly used these features to identify bars and venues that illegally broadcast matches.

"LaLiga disagrees profoundly with this decision, rejects the penalty imposed as unjust, unfounded and disproportionate and considers that the AEPD has not made the necessary efforts to understand how the technology works," said LaLiga on 12/06/2019.
