Serie A: 2013 winter transfer window

The 2013 winter transfer window in Serie A was characterised by the highest number of transactions (341) and amount of player sales (€83.8m) of the five major European championships. Serie A has the second highest balance of payments deficit, behind the English Premier League, at - €23.8m.

The Italian market is also different from other Top 5 European Championships by the high volume of transactions carried out internally: 78% of departures and 73% of arrivals were signed between Serie A clubs or those within the lower Italian divisions.

The winter transfer window of 2013 Serie A is also characterised by the highest rate of transactions per player; 1.32 transactions per player in Serie A were involved in this winter transfer window of 2013, against 1.1 in the Premier League and 1.06 in Ligue 1. This rate reflects the fact that many Serie A players are involved in several transactions (loan returns or players bought and then immediately loaned out). These transactions were mostly made with Serie B clubs or other lower Italian divisions.
