Real Madrid CF: launch of a women's team in 2020 via the acquisition of CD Tacón (Liga Iberdrola)

"The Real Madrid CF (LaLiga Santander) board of directors, which met today, 25/06/2019, agreed to propose a merger through absorption of the women's football club, Club Deportivo Tacón, with effect from 01/07/2020," announced the Spanish club on 25/06/2019.

Club Deportivo Tacón, founded in 2014, was promoted to Liga Femenina Iberdrola at the end of the 2018-19 season. In 2019-20, its first team will keep its current name but will train and play its matches at the Ciudad Real Madrid, the training centre of the Madrid club. It is only from the 2020-21 season that Real Madrid will possess a women's team under its own name.

In the 2018-19 season, 10 LaLiga Santander clubs also added a women's team to the 16-team Liga Iberdrola: Club Atlético de Madrid, FC Barcelona, Levante UD, Athletic Club Bilbao, Real Betis Balompié, Real Sociedad de Futbol, Valencia CF, RCD Espanyol, Sevilla FC and Rayo Vallecano.
