Spain: DAZN have "no intention" of sub-licensing LaLiga broadcasting rights (Veronica Diquattro)

"We currently have no intention of doing so (regarding a possible distribution or sub-licensing agreement with Telefonica for LaLiga Santander's broadcasting rights in Spain), until the CNMC reviews its criteria for 2020-21," said Veronica Diquattro, DAZN's vice-president revenue for Southern Europe (Italy and Spain), in a statement reported by the Spanish website Palco 23, on 18/07/2019.

Since 2015, the CNMC has required the holder(s) of LaLiga Santander's match broadcasting rights to offer a distribution agreement to other operators for a fee. One of the criteria for determining the price of the agreement is the cost of bandwidth access for pay-TV services. DAZN is not subject to these fees as an OTT operator.

"Telefonica is strictly respecting the commitments made in 2015 by the CNMC and the same rules and conditions are applied to all. Telefonica has treated DAZN and the rest of the pay-TV operators equally," said the Spanish telecommunications operator to Palco 23.
