Brazil 2014: 230 people arrested during a demonstration in Sao Paulo against the World Cup

Nearly 230 people were arrested and at least five were injured in Sao Paulo on 23/02/2014 during a demonstration against the 2014 World Cup to be held in Brazil (12/06 to 13/07/2014 ). One thousand people marched in the streets before clashes erupted between protesters and security forces.

52% of Brazilians were in favor of the protests and 42% are against the 2014 World Cup, according to a survey published by the Brazilian press on 24/02/2014. According to 85.4% of respondents, more protests will be held during the competition.

"Brazil is prepared to ensure the safety of its citizens and visitors. The government's investment in the areas of security and defense totalled 1.9b reais (€590m)," said Dilma Rousseff, the President of Brazil during a visit to the state of Piaui (north-east of the country) on 18/02/2014.
