Spain: Orange signs distribution agreement with Telefonica for LaLiga and European Cup matches

The Spanish subsidiary of the telecommunications group Orange has signed a distribution agreement with its competitor Telefonica to distribute its football channels on 25/07/2019. The value of the agreement would exceed €300m per year according to the Spanish press. The duration of the agreement has not been communicated, but Orange notably proposes offers with a 24-month commitment.

Telefonica owns the broadcasting rights in Spain of LaLiga Santander (9 matches out of 10) and LaLiga 1|2|3 (9 matches out of 11) for almost €1bn per season (2019-2022 cycle), as well as the European Cup rights for the 2018-2021 cycle, acquired from the Chinese-Spanish audiovisual group Mediapro, for €360m per season on 28/06/2018.

The free-TV group Mediaset España also concluded a distribution agreement with Telefonica and announced the launch of a pay-TV offer (€35 per month, €30 for the first three months) with LaLiga Santander (9 matches out of 10), LaLiga 1|2|3 (9 matches out of 11), the Champions League and the Europa League on 19/07/2019.
