Italy: FIGC studies the possibility of expanding the Serie A Women from 12 to 14 clubs in 2020-21

"I asked to evaluate the possibility of changing the format of the 2020-21 Serie A Women's league, given that several of the men's Serie A clubs have expressed a desire to increase the league from 12 to 14 teams. For greater involvement and an ever-expanding championship," said Gabriele Gravina, president of the FIGC, at the end of the Federal Council on 30/07/2019.

In the other European Top 5 Women's leagues, the first football division consists of 12 teams, with the exception of Spain, where 16 clubs compete in the Liga Femenina Iberdrola.

"President (Gianni) Infantino (president of FIFA) told me that there was a clear rule that did not allow for any interpretation (about the possible participation of the Italian women's team in a qualifying tournament for the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games). We need to understand what position Britain will take and what kind of agreement has been reached between the British (England have qualified by reaching the semi-finals of the 2019 Women's World Cup in France), but at the moment I don't think there are any possibilities (see below)…
