FIFA: 32 teams (instead of 24) will compete at the next Women's World Cup in 2023

The FIFA Council has "unanimously" decided to increase the number of teams participating in the final phase of the next edition of the Women's World Cup in 2023 from 24 to 32. They will be divided into eight groups of four, announced the International Federation on 31/07/2019.

"The astounding success of this year's FIFA Women's World Cup in France made it very clear that this is the time to keep the momentum going and take concrete steps to foster the growth of women’s football. I am glad to see this proposal - the first of several - becoming a reality," said Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA.

"Since the bidding process for the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 is already underway - with the nine bidders (Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, South Africa, Brazil, South Africa and South Korea for a joint bid with North Korea) initially expected to submit their bid books on 04/10/2019 - the FIFA Council exceptionally made this decision remotely, and not at one of its meetings, the next of which is scheduled for 23-24/10/2019 in Shanghai (China)," said FIFA.
