Turkey: Digiturk (beIN) renegotiates financial terms of the broadcasting contract for the Süper Lig

The Turkish pay-TV group Digiturk, a subsidiary of the Qatari beIN Media Group, and the Turkish Football Federation (TFF) "have reached a landmark new agreement that secures financial certainty for the Turkish Süper Lig," announced the two entities on 02/08/2019.

"The parties have agreed exchange rate caps, which are representing another major financial commitment on behalf of Digiturk. In another key element to the new deal, the parties agreed that the rampant illegal piracy levels in Turkey posed an existential threat to the TFF’s commercial rights. Therefore the TFF and the clubs will now take much more responsibility in fighting the theft of the Süper Lig’s intellectual property," stated Digiturk.

Digiturk had extended its audiovisual rights to the Turkish Süper Lig via the TFF for five years, the 2017-2022 period, for an estimated amount of $590m (€550m) per season on 21/11/2016. The exchange rate was, at the time, 1 US dollar / 3.32 Turkish lira. It then went down to 1 US dollar / 7.09 Turkish lira in August 2018.
